Generator & UPS Load Bank Testing

Annual Testing

Backup generators that are run every month for exercising get what is known as "Wet Stacking". This is a condition in diesel engines when all the fuel is not burned and passes on into the exhaust side of the turbocharger and on into the exhaust system. This happens because the diesel is meant to be under full load during part of its running cycle.

Since most generators are only exercised under partial load or no load conditions (compared to the full capabilities of the generator) they should be connected to a load bank that will take the generator through its entire load range every year or 250 engine-operating hrs, whichever comes first.

Rocky Mtn. Electric

Rocky Mtn. Electric, LLC offers load bank testing up to 115KW for all voltages ie: 120, 208, 240, 277, 480 single phase and three phase.

Load Bank testing not only reduces wet stacking but is also designed to provide electrical loads for testing power sources such as generators and Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). The load banks also check the engine's ability to provide the required horsepower over time, frequency stability, and the alternators ability to provide the required voltage stability.

We will test your generator or UPS "under load" to confirm the output is correct for the rated voltage and amps. If it is not performing up to specifications, we can give you direction on what needs to be done so your system will function correctly and reduce the risk of failure when you need performance during a power outage.

By doing load bank testing on a yearly (or every 250 running hrs) basis you can have confidence that your emergency generator will function properly and supply power for the intended life of the generator system.

Since we will be bringing your diesel engine up to full running temperature this is an excellent time to have the oil changed because the oil and debris runs out smoother when hot than it does during a cold oil change. We change the oil, oil filter(s), fuel filter(s), correctly dispose of the oil, air filter, check the coolant level and antifreeze settings. We use John Deere oil that has been specially designed for diesel engines and exceeds the design specification of oils such as Shell Rotella and Valvoline.
